Which Type of Filtration is
Right For Me?
There are two popular methods of filtration –
Cartridge, and Diatomaceous Earth (D.E). Downunda Aquatic Environments can provide either type of system, depending
on your preference. Your Downunda Aquatic Environments representative
can answer any questions you might have.
Cartridge
Cartridge filters are designed to run at
lower pressure than DE which puts less backpressure
on the pump, providing more flow and turnover. Cartridge
filters should be cleaned once or twice a season
by simply hosing them off. Cartridge element filters
trap debris as small as 10 to 15 microns.
Diatomaceous Earth (D.E)
Diatomaceous earth is mined and is the fossilized
exoskeletons of tiny diatoms. They are used to coat
"grids" in the filter housing and act as tiny sieves
allowing for the removal of debris as small as 5
microns. Once the pressure rises, the filter is
backwashed and then "recharged" with more DE powder.
DE filters trap debris as small as 2 - 5 microns.
Need Help Deciding?
For ease of maintenance and cost, Downunda Aquatic Environments
typically recommends a cartridge filter system.
- Filtration is good at 10-15 microns
- Maintenance is 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a
season and easy, just remove and rinse the filter
- Cost is low even if you replace the cartridge
annually.
- No water is wasted back flushing
- Low system backpressure means the pump
works easier and quieter
For those that want the highest polished water,
DE is the way to go.
- Filtration is excellent at 2-5 microns (that's
the size of bacteria)
- Because the filtration is finer the backpressure
against the pump is higher. This causes the
pump to work a bit harder using slightly more
electricity.
- Maintenance is 15-20 minutes, 2-3 times
a season
- Backwash the system
- Recharge by adding DE powder through
the skimmer
- Each cleaning uses DE Powder and 400-800
gallons of water.
